Need To Buy A Marquee?

  • 12th October 2021
  • by Daniel Lassman

We are all starting to realise how much more space a restaurant or a pub has when you take your garden into account. Because we run many corporate and private events as well as quiz nights in venues, we have been asked many times if we know of any reliable marquee providers. If you are looking to buy a marquee we highly recommend UK Tents

Why We Recommend UK Tents

UK Tents describe themselves as “A leading UK based supplier of Marquees & Accessories” as they have everything you need to buy, store and secure party tents in a range of sizes. We have recommended them to many of our clients and they have had incredible results, if you was to take the manager (Paul) of the Woodman pub in Essendon for example. They are a small venue with a big garden so we advised them to maximise their covers by using a marquee from UK Tents. We asked him how he was getting on with his new investment and here is what he said…

I was looking at ways to improve our revenue and raising the number of tables was a quick way of doing this. For me to get a permanent structure would have cost me well over ten thousand pounds and I couldn’t afford this. I was recommended to buy a marquee by Weekly Quiz and I went for a 5×10 professional marquee which has been out standing to say the least.

Paul decorated his marquee with lining, furniture and leaf effect to cover the steel bars. Below is a picture:

UK Tents Reviews

We have worked with UK Tents over the years for many corporate clients. We wanted to find out if we are the only people that speak so highly of them and that’s when we came across their Trust Pilot reviews. One thing that took us by surprise was the different industries and people that needed to buy a marquee. Here are the latest few reviews they have received:

Posted 9th October by The Marquee Company

“Having opened a new marquee hire business we searched for weeks to find the perfect supplier. Spoke to Dan at UK TENTS and straight away he was offering everything we required and at an unbeatable price. It’s been a few months now and we haven’t used anyone else. They are also available to give you on the phone assistant whenever you need it. Highly recommended”

Posted 8th October by Andrew McKinna

“A delay in the relaxing of COVID restrictions in July 2021 caused a massive complication for my late father’s Celebration of Life, where we suspected many more people would turn up at the Church than had forrmaly responded, assuming that they would be able to attend – and where the total number of responses was already bumping up against the limit dictated by social distancing regulations. The Church Hall provided the solution for the overflow from the service, which could be streamed live – but that left the challenge of where to host the tea afterwards for those in the Church. UK Tents were able to solve the problem, by providing sufficient marquees, and were brilliant every step of the way! Thank you so much!”

Posted 5th October by Michael

“Bought a marquee a couple of weekends ago and it arrived within 4 days, it completely saved my birthday bbq celebrations because the whole day was a complete washout as forecast. Really easy to assemble and take down, excellent quality without any hassle”

They are rated 98% Excellent and 2% Great with 53 5 stars and 1 4 star reviews which tells us we aren’t the only company that have had great experiences in the past and we will definitely use them in the future.

Weekly Quiz Social Media

Social media can be a powerful tool, the power of which can be harnessed to help promote your business – it can also be counter-productive.

I will at the outset apologise if this blog is a tad drier than some we’ve posted but I hope you’ll find the contents useful.

Whereas we typically talk about social media as a single entity it is of course a collection of different platforms, each designed to serve a different purpose, albeit many of them can intercommunicate. For example, you can link your tweet to Facebook so that if you post on one it’ll replicate on the other (and you can control in which direction this occurs).

So, let’s look at a few of the main players individually, how to use them to help promote your events, indeed how we at Weekly Quiz Ltd use them, and feel free to copy our techniques if you find them useful.

Facebook

The daddy of them all – functionality is continuously being upgraded – Facebook can do more this week than last and no doubt some new sparkly facility will be added next week. There are basically two different platforms within Facebook you can use as a business and both are free to set up… first there are groups, useful if you want a free exchange of ideas and discussions where (subject to settings) any member can post or comment – better for a business is to set up a “page” where the owner and any appointed administrators have greater control over content. You can of course within the page post events that are added to your pages’ diary and you can invite potential customers (those that have “liked” or “followed”) to attend, all for free – you can of course pay to boost both posts and events to a wider audience but if you’ve been clever at attracting your local customers onto your page anyway, then normally you won’t need to.

Posts should be colourful, include a GIF or picture and have enough detail to allow customers to attend without having to contact you.

Twitter

Often referred to as “micro blogging” due to the tight character restrictions for any tweet (currently 280 characters) so you must be economical and catchy with your tweets – it helps to be irreverent and humorous from time to time to encourage additional followers. It also helps if you follow twitter users who may have an interest in your events as they may be already reaching the people you’re trying to attract.

Twitter also supports hashtags (a word or phrase without spaces preceded by the # symbol) – try to include relevant tags in your posts, look at what’s trending (you’ll know it is as twitter will offer autocomplete suggestions as you type – try typing “#Monday” for example) but keep them relevant – no point adding #AskingForAFriend if your promoting a pub event night as it won’t encourage retweeting. Again, a GIF or picture can add colour and interest.

Instagram

Think Twitter but picture rather than word driven. The picture tells the story with the added caption filling in the blanks… choose your pictures with care as that’s what will attract people as will hashtags within the description.

Instagram is owned by Facebook so using the two together is encouraged but again you control how and when.

Weekly Quiz Social Media

OK, not strictly social media but we have to shoe horn the self-promotion somewhere – specifically aimed at quizzers, check out the first, (to the best of our knowledge) only, and the finest quiz finding search engine in the world! Every venue we support has their own full web page including an interactive calendar and users can search by day of the week, location , postcode or even partial pub names…

Others

There are others of course – but these are either not popular enough (yet?) or not really suitable as marketing tools.

You may however want to checkout Snapchat, Google + or Reddit which may be of some limited use, but you may conclude that they are more trouble than they’re worth.

See you out there in cyber space but don’t forget that the very best social media is still face to face word of mouth, printed posters, flyers and even chalk boards at the venue itself!

make money becoming a Weekly Quiz Affiliate

You may be reading this because you are one of our many funny and talented hosts or perhaps you are an avid quizzer who regularly plays one of our quiz nights, maybe you own, manage or work for one of the venues across the country where we host our quizzes… maybe you just tripped over us with a Google search – it’s possible that you even found us by searching on Yahoo (yea, right)…

The Product

Weekly Quiz is arguably the fastest growing quiz entertainment company in the UK that offers a complete end to end service – providing everything a venue needs to make a night a success, the quiz itself including up to date questions tied to the time of year, current events etc., the host (aka Quizmaster) – a skilled presenter from an entertainment background, often stand up comedians or trained actors, microphone and speaker if required, even pens!

We even have an option for a “TV game show” style quiz with a fully interactive wireless buzzer system as well. As we are increasingly becoming  the “go to” brand for many of the largest pub chains in the UK as they know and love what we can provide. A great and economical night out to entertain their customers and a valuable source of revenue to the venues themselves.

How To Make Money

We are constantly on the look out for new venues that want to host regular quiz nights and we are willing to put our money where our mouth is – if you know a venue, and it doesn’t have to be a pub – we also host quiz nights in sports clubs, social clubs, golf clubs, Student Union bars, indeed anywhere where people gather for a social evening (or perhaps a lunchtime?) then why not tell us about them?

All we need is the name, address, contact number and name of the manager of the venue as well as your contact details and we’ll do the rest. If the venue agrees to hold our quiz nights and runs just one night, we will reward you with a finder’s fee of £50. Sounds interesting?

Quiz Team Name Competition

Quiz Team Name Competition

This all started with a casual conversation with the boss in the office – we were skimming the Team Names page of this website when the boss sighed in only the way bosses can.

“I’ve been promoting pub quizzes now for over 15 years”, he confided “and I can’t remember the last time I saw a truly original, witty, pithy, team name”.

I reassured him that they were out there and possibly because his role had become more office based he just wasn’t seeing them.

He shrugged. “I’m not so sure.”

I laughed “look I do a few quizzes a month and there are always surprises out there, names that make me smile, occasionally laugh or think – names that are new AND make an impact.”

He had that sort of cynical look on his face.

“look” I said, sort of squaring up to him in an assertive yet still respectful way “I’ll prove it, put your money where your mouth is – let’s run a competition to find the best original and memorable pub quiz team name out there – you’ll just have to give a little, err, pecuniary incentive.”

He smiled, he nodded…

The Competition

The Team Name Competition is open to any individual or team to submit their favourite team name (whether it’s been used in a quiz or not) All entries will be judged by Weekly Quiz and the overall winner will receive £100 via a straight forward bank transfer around a week after the closing date of June 17th 2018.

Enter or just have a look at for inspiration on out quiz team name page. but obviously avoid submitting one that’s already on any of the lists (as it won’t win, its not original)

Quizmasters in London

  • 14th May 2018
  • by Daniel Lassman

This blog, unlike previous insights is not to promote the various services we provide but instead to do what all businesses in the entertainment industry should do occasionally and that’s to step back, catch our breath and celebrate a small section of our roster of Quizmasters – those that work within the metropolis that is London.

Quick note from me: If you are looking for a quiz master in London check out our Pub Quiz Master page on the website.

We don’t just host in London

We host quizzes all over the UK and employ professional Quizmasters for each and every one of them. We’ve hosted quiz nights in private members clubs, restaurants, hotels, birthday parties, weddings, office board rooms, sports centres, tents, festivals, building sites, schools and scout huts. Of course, let’s not forget the vast number of pubs that choose to use us week in, week out.

Although, in the broadest sense the “product” (an evening of brain taxing fun, excitement and trivia) remains the same, each venue, weekly event, party or team build develops and takes on a personality and character all its own. Nowhere is this truer than in the Capital.

Quizmasters in London

The general hustle and bustle, congestion, pace of life, density of population and businesses, whilst in themselves not unique, combine in a way to create something a little bit different.

I should add that this is no way denigrates or belittles the work that our hosts do across the country and no doubt in the weeks and months to come we’ll shine the spot light on different venues, parts of the country, profiles of quizmasters and players so quizmasters away from “the old smoke” … your time will come!

So, what makes London different?

If you’ve lived or worked here for any given length of time you’ll soon conclude that “London” is not an entity, it’s more like a collection of small towns, districts and villages fused together into the capital. As you travel around (and by car it can take as much as a couple of hours to cross from one side to the other) there’s always something new to discover. For instance, Peckham, Brixton, Bow, Chelsea, Fulham, St Johns Wood, the City of London, the West End, Harrow are completely different in terms of custom, amenities, transport, commerce, population and architecture.

Congestion is another issue – the roads can be clogged and not just in rush hour – and parking sometimes is costly, that’s if you can find a space! Although that is largely balanced by an excellent urban public transport network, pity the poor quizmaster trying to get themselves along with a professional speaker/amplifier, microphone and possibly a laptop or tablet to a venue.

The great work our quizmasters (or hosts as we prefer to call them) do needs to be recognised. Their job does not start and end when the quiz does of course. We generally use stand up comedians or trained actors or similar entertainers as our hosts (we even have an “iron man” sports man on the books) several of whom have TV, radio or Edinburgh fringe credits and with London being a focal point for entertainment (indeed it was the birth place of the now national comedy circuit and it has a thriving west End and Fringe Theatre) we are blessed with an abundance of talent.

Thanks to all of our fantastic quiz masters!

So, to all the Quiz hosts across the capital who tonight will be driving, or on a bus or the tube or even walking and cycling to deliver a fun evening of quizzing to the delight of our many thousands of regular quizzers pause – just for a second – take a breath and smile – you have our thanks for the great work you do.

You can find a small selection of our Quizmasters on our hire a quizmaster page.

Best wishes,

The weekly Quiz Team.

How to run a pub quiz

  • 9th April 201815th January 2024
  • by Daniel Lassman

How to run a pub quiz:  Step 1. Ring 020 8798 9228 / 07484 672 715

Step 2. Book a quiz

Step 3. Job done, relax.

Right, that’s the marketing pitch done. Assuming you’re still ready and want to go the do-it-yourself route then few hints and tips. Let’s start with the building blocks of a successful quiz..

How to run a pub quiz

The Venue

Your players will ideally all have line of sight of your “quiz host” (who I’ll assume is you) and vice versa. Before the quiz, check that everyone can hear you – if your using an amplifier and microphone then do a sound check, have someone listen from different parts of the room for both clarity and volume (echo can be a nuisance) – if needs be reposition the speakers, adjust the volume and tone controls – increasing treble and decreasing bass may make you sound slightly tinny but clearer.

Also remember that once the room fills the sound quality will change. What you may not realise is your volume will decrease both due to the (hopefully) happy chatter in the room and because we absorb some of the sound energy (true dat) so don’t be afraid to adjust the volume upwards (but avoid distortion).

Make sure there are tables for your teams – if there are no tables then invest in clipboards.

Before The Quiz

You can have the quiz answer sheets, table/picture rounds, scrap paper and pens laid out on each table before your guests arrive on each table.

When your players file in, let them know they can get a head start on the table round(s) – a more guest friendly way of encouraging teams to take their seats than simply asking them to. It’ll also get them in a quiz frame of mind.

The Quiz

If your quiz has any novelty rounds or rules (and my advice is to not over load your quiz this way, there’s still a place for comfort that comes with the simple and straight forward) then make sure you clearly articulate these at the beginning of the night. Your role as Quizmaster is not only to present the questions, mark the answers and present prizes, its about injecting some entertainment into the proceedings – making it an event. That’s why here at Weekly Quiz our hosts are experienced performers, many are professional comedians.

The questions should be a balanced and accessible collection of interesting trivial facts (do you know the name of which country contains all the vowels but once and once only?*), a few easy ones to keep people engaged and some difficult teasers that make people think and get teams talking.

To start you off we’ve some free questions that you are welcome to use (pilfer?) – scroll down to the bottom of our home page for all the links – here’s a starter https://www.weeklyquiz.co.uk/general-knowledge-fun-quiz/
